Introduction
This pattern makes these assumptions:
- All Seam Allowances are 1/4" (unless otherwise noted.)
- User should now how to make simple Nine Patch blocks and HST triangles blocks.
- Press seams in opposite directions when joining columns and rows.
- WOF = Width of Fabric
- Basic quilt making techniques such as piecing, adding borders, and sandwiching, quilting, and binding, are not provided here.
Cutting Instructions
Note:Advanced quilters might see the simplicity in creating Pieces A and B below with just two strips. In this case, you would omit 16 - 1.75" strips of Color C and replace them with 8 - 3.0" strips of Color C, and modify assembly directions below as needed. I have left these blocks as standard Nine Patch Blocks for ease of assembly and "stitch in the ditch" quilting.)
- Cut 8 strips 1.75" x WOF each of Color A and Color B. (For 9patches)
- Cut Cut 23 strips 1.75" x WOF of Color C.
- Cut 3 strips 4.75 x WOF each of Color A and Color B. (For Half Square Triangle)
Cut these strips down into 4.75" squares. You will need 18 4.75" x 4.75" squares of Color A and Color B.- Cut 6 strips 3" x WOF of Color A (For Inner Border)
- Cut 8 strips 4" x WOF of Color B (For Outer Border)
- Cut 6 strips 3" x WOF of Color B (For Binding)
Assembling the Nine Patch Blocks
Piece A
Join 1 Color A strip with 2 Color C strips as shown above. Cut these strips into 1.75" width units. (The strip should measure 4.25" wide, thus, your new units should measure 1.75" x 4.25")Piece B
Join 1 Color B strip with 2 Color C strips as shown above. Cut these strips into 1.75" width units. (The strip should measure 4.25" wide, thus, your new units should measure 1.75" x 4.25")Piece C
Join 1 Color B strip with 1 Color C strip and then 1 Color A strip as shown above. Cut these strips into 1.75" width units. (The strip should measure 4.25" wide, thus, your new units should measure 1.75" x 4.25")Piece D
Join 1 Color C strip with 1 Color A strip and then 1 Color C strip again as shown above. Cut these strips into 1.75" width units. (The strip should measure 4.25" wide, thus, your new units should measure 1.75" x 4.25")Piece E
Join 1 Color C strip with 1 Color B strip and then 1 Color C strip again as shown above. Cut these strips into 1.75" width units. (The strip should measure 4.25" wide, thus, your new units should measure 1.75" x 4.25")9 patch continuation
Now, you will create the 4.25" sub-blocks as follows:
Block1 Block2 Block3
PieceA PieceA PieceC
PieceC PieceB PieceB
PieceA PieceA PieceC
Block4 Block5 Block6
PieceC PieceB PieceB
PieceA PieceD PieceA
PieceB PieceE PieceB Phew...Ok, we are almost there...
Half Square Triangle Blocks
Now, take your 4.75" squares of Color A and Color B and make your Half Square Triangle Blocks (HST). Trim these down into 4.25" x 4.25" squares. (Go to instructions for HST.)
Now, we have all of the components for making the "Steps & Landings" block.
Steps & Landings Block Assembly
Join your HST and 9 patch blocks as follows, pressing the seams of each row in opposite direction:
Your Steps & Landings block should look like this:
Quilt Assembly
- Join the S&L blocks into 4 rows of 3 blocks each. Press Seam Allowances in opposite directions from row to row.
- Add the Inner and Outer borders. (Read Special Border Instructions.)
- Sandwich, Quilt, and Bind your quilt. (Read Binding Instructions.)
That's it. You have a lovely lap size, or crib quilt.
Try different color combinations and S&L block orientations for different looks.
