Hop Scotch Block

HopScotch Quilt Block

This one just came to me and it is so easy, and so fun. I looked at the completed block and just thought "hopscotch." Don't ask me why. :-) But I am so happy to share it with you.

Fabrics needed:

SwatchQuantity for 9 PatchesQuantity for HST
Fabric AFabric A Swatch2" x WOF5" x WOF
Fabric BFabric B Swatch2" x WOF5" x WOF

Nine Patch Squares:

  • Take 1 strip of Fabric A and join it with 1 strip of Fabric B. Press seam towards Fabric A.
  • Take another strip of Fabric A and join to the other side of the Fabric B strip. Press seam toward Fabric A.
  • You should now have a 5" wide section that looks like this:

    stripA
We will call this strip section "Strip A."

  • Now, take one strip of Fabric A and join to 1 strip of Fabric B. Press seam towards Fabric B this time.
  • Take another strip of Fabric B and add it to the other side of Fabric A strip. Press seam toward Fabric B.
  • You should now have a 5" wide section that looks like this:

    stripB
We will call this strip section "Strip B."

  • Cut each of these strips down into 2" x 5" units.
  • Sew the 2" strips together in this order:

    To form this 5" x 5"block:
    small 9patch

You will need 6 of these small 9 patch squares for the HopScotch block.

Making the HST Squares

  • Cut your 5" x WOF Strips of Fabric A and Fabric B down into 5" x 5" squares.
  • Take 3 of your Fabric A squares and 3 of your 9 patch squares to create 6 HSTs. (Instructions for creating HST.)

    HST 2

  • Take 3 of your Fabric B squares and 3 of your 9 patch squares to create 6 HSTs.

    HST 1

  • Trim all of your HST squares to 4.5" x 4.5" aligning your 45° angle on your ruler with the seam of the square.
  • You should now have 12 HSTs.

Assembling the HopScotch Block

The HopScotch Block is created by making a 9 patch square using the HSTs created in the prior step.

Following this table, sew your 9 patch blocks by rows, pressing seam allowances for rows 1 and 3 to the outside and for row 2 to the inside.

Row 1Half Square Triangle 1 Half Square Triangle 2 Half Square Triangle 1
Row 2Half Square Triangle 2 Half Square Triangle 1 Half Square Triangle 2
Row 3Half Square Triangle 1 Half Square Triangle 2 Half Square Triangle 1

Suggested Layouts

This block is a fun one to play with the layout on. Depending on how you arrange the blocks, you get a lot of different looks, mostly geometrical of course. (my favorite.) If you go back to the creation of the HopScotch block, and do some rearranging with the HST squares, you can come up with even more options. Have fun and experiment. I will link to the layout graphics seperately to conserve download times. Click the "Back" button your browser to return to this page.

Layout 1 with simple border.
Layout 2 with double borders.
Layout 3.
Layout 4.
Layout 5 (set on point w/borders).
Layout 6 (Using 16 blocks) {Lexy made me do this one}.
Layout 6 with pieced corner borders.
Ok, I could go on and on...but I am ready for a new pattern. :-)
