Introduction

There are many great sources of books available for the beginning quilter:

• Quilter's Complete Guide by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter
  I started with this book and absolutely love it.
• Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!!: The Complete Guide to Quiltmaking by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes
  I haven't seen this one, but it has been highly recommended by members of various quilt forums.
• Heirloom Machine Quilting: A Comprehensive Guide to Hand-Quilted Effects Using Your Sewing Machine by Harriet Hargrave
  Harriet is renowned in the arena of machine quilting. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to machine quilt.
• Hand Quilting with Alex Anderson: Six Projects for Hand Quilters by Alex Anderson
  I haven't read this one, but if you want to do hand quilting, it is purported to be an excellent choice. (Alex is the hostess of Simply Quilts on HGTV.)
• Your First Quilt Book (or it should be!)by Carol Doak
  I didn't get this book but I hear it is wonderful. Ms. Doak is a leader in paper piecing techniques.
• The Block Book by Judy Martin
  I will be making my first ever quilt for myself from this book. I tell you, it is one of the best I have evern purchased because I can just sit and drool over the stars for hours. I highly recommend this book when you are feeling like a "confident beginner".
• Better Homes and Gardens 501 Quilt Blocks: A Treasury of Patterns for Patchwork and Applique
  While I would not recommend this book for instruction, it is one of the two best quilt block resources books available. Read on for the #1 Quilt Block Reference book.
• Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns by Barbara Brackman(Compiler)
  This book has been one of my nemesis! Each time I design a new block, I look in this book only to discover that the block isn't new at all. ;-) An excellent resource book for any quilter.
• 101 Fabulous Rotary-Cut Quilts by Nancy J. Martin and Judy D. Hopkins
  All I can say is that this is a great book for the confident beginner. It touches on a few brief introductory lessons and then gives you 101 wonderful quilt patterns. Be sure to actually look at the blocks because I find that the fabric selections in the book are less than desireable.

Now, I would recommend visiting your local library and checking out these books before purchasing. There are many different styles of instruction and one may appeal to you better than the other. Most of these books are also available at your Local Quilt Shop or Retail Fabric line (such as Joann Fabrics).
